Courses

About

We offer a range of beginner, intermediate and advanced classes where we delve more deeply into the methods and processes used in geometric design. The classes focus on different aspects of technique and design looking at geometry and pattern from sites around the world.

Classes have a specific focus with the objective of developing a deeper understanding of the topic as a whole. We explore the patterns in detail working through the underlying structures within them as well as the history and application of these patterns.

We update our classes regularly and multiple times, so take a look and see what we have on offer. All current classes are listed below. You can also contact us if there is a specific class that you want us to run again or a specific topic that is of interest to you.

World of Pattern

An Online Monthly Pattern Club

Join our monthly pattern club, where we gather online to explore and draw a new pattern each session. This time we are going to step beyond the patterns of the Alhambra, embarking on a global journey, discovering and creating patterns from all around the world.

Each session will focus on a different design, looking at where it comes from and how it’s created, guiding you step-by-step as we draw together, followed by a Q&A and a chance to share your work. One of the unique aspects of this world of geometry is the sense of community each course fosters, building connections and friendships as we explore the beauty of geometric patterns. I look forward to seeing familiar faces regularly!

Thursday April 30th
A Roundel Pattern

After our first week long retreat, which was FANTASTIC and filled with wonderful people, we have been drawing a lot of Alhambra patterns so for this online class we thought we would go in a different direction and add a little bit of sunshine to celebrate the start of Spring. I chose lots of reds and oranges, as you probably know one of my favourite colours schemes, it always make me feel chirpy and alive, and I cant wait to see what you do with it!

I found a very simple version of this originally in a plaiin cement tile, but tweaking it with a few extra elements turns it into something much more complex and beautiful. Perhaps our trip to the Alhambra last week was the spark as we were having conversations about roundels while surrounded by so many examples of interlaced patterns; great art cannot help but inspire!

Wandering the Alhambra as the turn of seasons brought life to the gardens of the palace, I couldn’t help but think of how this time of year must have inspired the original artists. Tulips were rising out of the earth, the buds on the trees were spreading blooms, the swallows darted back and forth through the arches and the sunlight cut through the wooden trellises throwing patterns across the already richly ornamented floors.

Although Islamic art focuses on the geometry that we love, it also incorporates the geometry and forms abundant in nature. Biomorphic patterns, or Arabesque as they are known as in Spain, are the repetitive naturally inspired forms that can be seen in many Mosques around the world. I am sure in many ways the gardens surrounding the Alhambra intruded into the palace itself and into the patterns it was decorated with.

The pattern I’ll be teaching this month is a roundel, a roundel being a circular design motif and I hope you will enjoy it! Please join me on Thursday the 30th of April at 7pm for a calming session of drawing. You can join through the website or message us and we can connect you. If you can’t make it live, don’t worry, you will be sent the recording of the session plus a pdf guide of the pattern steps, all easy to follow at your own pace.
