About

We offer a range of beginner, intermediate and advanced classes where we delve more deeply into the methods and processes used in geometric design. The classes focus on different aspects of technique and design looking at geometry and pattern from sites around the world.

Classes have a specific focus with the objective of developing a deeper understanding of the topic as a whole. We explore the patterns in detail working through the underlying structures within them as well as the history and application of these patterns.

We update our classes regularly and multiple times, so take a look and see what we have on offer. All current classes are listed below. You can also contact us if there is a specific class that you want us to run again or a specific topic that is of interest to you.

World of Pattern

An Online Monthly Pattern Club

Join our monthly pattern club, where we gather online to explore and draw a new pattern each session. This time we are going to step beyond the patterns of the Alhambra, embarking on a global journey, discovering and creating patterns from all around the world.

Each session will focus on a different design, looking at where it comes from and how it’s created, guiding you step-by-step as we draw together, followed by a Q&A and a chance to share your work. One of the unique aspects of this world of geometry is the sense of community each course fosters, building connections and friendships as we explore the beauty of geometric patterns. I look forward to seeing familiar faces regularly!

Itmad Ud Daula in Agra in India is credited as the first style of building built in white marble, showing the transition between the Mughal style of red brick as represented at Agra Fort, and moving towards the style of Taj Mahal. In fact this building is sometimes referred to as the baby Taj Mahal.

Another moniker it is sometimes given is the Jewel Box, which  I think is a much more alluring name! Built between 1622 and 1628, its whole facade is white marble inlaid with coloured stones to create a plethora of beautiful pattern.

This whole facade is filled with different patterns, and is breathtaking! The history of Ghiyas Beg, who it was built for, is a beautiful tale of a poor merchant from Persia who travelled with his family by caravan to the court of the Mughal Emperor, Akbar.  After Akbar’s death his son Jahangir became emperor, and appointed Ghiyas Beg, who had worked his way up in the government, as his Wazir. He was then given the title of Itmad-ud-Daulah or the ‘pillar of the state’ and this tomb was built by Ghiyas Beg’s daughter after his death. She had  married Emperor Jahangir, and in fact Ghiyas Beg’s granddaughter through his son was the person who the Taj Mahal was built for.

As you can see, this pattern has quite the legacy and I hope you join us to draw it!

Today is the day to start doing more art!
