World of Pattern

An Online Monthly Pattern Club

Join our monthly pattern club, where we gather online to explore and draw a new pattern each session. This time we are going to step beyond the patterns of the Alhambra, embarking on a global journey, discovering and creating patterns from all around the world.

Each session will focus on a different design, looking at where it comes from and how it’s created, guiding you step-by-step as we draw together, followed by a Q&A and a chance to share your work. One of the unique aspects of this world of geometry is the sense of community each course fosters, building connections and friendships as we explore the beauty of geometric patterns. I look forward to seeing familiar faces regularly!

For me, there are always two parts of this amazing artform, the construction of the pattern itself, and choosing of colours for painting the finished work. One is the final product that everyone gets to see, the other is often hidden from the public but the act of creating the work itself has so much to it that is never seen. The work with ruler and compass is so precise and metered, so considered and determined, yet it is so often left on the drawing board, quite literally in this case. Yet it is so enjoyable, it is truly a great joy, a delight in fact. There is this thrill I get when something lines up just right, an accumulation of lines happens and then a part just appears in the pattern, a star reveals itself, or a kite shape. It is quite magical.

It is a pity then that this work often gets filed away into my sketchbooks and that it is only seen by myself. But of course it doesn’t have to be this way. I know of so many artists who include all their construction lines in their finished pieces proudly showing the work that went into making the pattern. And it looks gorgeous!

Not only that but one of my favourite parts of the Alhambra is the little corridor that holds carvings of the key pattern, and there, in between the deep chiseled cuts of the pattern sits a series of construction lines that escaped final erasure. They hide there in plain sight amongst so much splendour. For me they are like a peek behind the curtain, a glimpse of where the great works were being made and I feel a real connection with the artists who worked on the Alhambra. Just for a moment it is as though they are right there in front of me.

This month’s online pattern, as you may have guessed, proudly displays its makings. I have chosen to include all of its construction lines in the finished piece.

I think it lends it the character of a work of engineering or architecture - just like a great bridge or a vaulted cathedral as we can marvel at the way it is all held in place.

Join me and spend some time drawing something beautiful on Monday, October 26th at 7pm Spanish time - you will also get a recording of the session afterwards if you can’t make it live or want to draw it again.

Intensive drawing class

In person and online

We’ll start by looking at grids that will allow you to extract various patterns, optimising what you can understand about patterns as you progress.

To maximise our time together, we'll focus on drawing rather than painting, ensuring that we can dive deeper into pattern work and understanding.
